Effingham, The Village c.1965

More about this scene
People first settled here at the foot of the North Downs because of the fresh water springs emerging from where the chalk meets a band of clay. Effingham expanded hundreds of years later once the railway arrived in 1885. Further growth in recent times included the addition of this row of shops in The Street, not far from the junction of the A246.
