Ellesmere Port, Dock Street c.1955

More about this scene
The Ellesmere Canal was busy, and more and more workers were needed to handle the goods and repair the barges; thus the port grew. Many of the Manchester Ship Canal workers settled here, where there was plenty of work to be had in the ever-spreading town. Here we see Dock Street (it led down to the old dock) looking slightly past its best. The Ellesmere Port Motor Company premises are on the left, but they look empty and deserted. The town has a very pleasant civic centre and shopping area, but today it has to compete with the large Cheshire Oaks retail outlet nearby. The docks are now a museum, and well worth a visit.
