Long before John Bunyan was born in the village, the son of a brazier or tinker, Elstow was known for its Benedictine nunnery founded in about 1075. The present church is the nave of the priory; the chancel and transepts were demolished after the Dissolution of the Monasteries by the new owners, the Radcliffes. The nave is partly Norman with 13th-century west bays, and there is, unusually, a detached 15th-century bell tower. To the far left are the ivy-clad remains of Hillersden Hall, a Jacobean E-plan mansion with the church as the north wing.
