The Bike Delivery Boys

A Memory of Eltham.

On leaving school in the early 1969's my very first job was delivering food orders from a local Co-Operative grocery shop in the Well Hall area by means of a trade bike. This was a big sturdy bicycle fitted with a huge metal basket on the front, big enough to carry quite large orders to customers in the locality. This was such a fun job where I met lots of interesting people who often showed their appreciation of a home delivery with orange juice, biscuits or cake. Delivery by trade bike was not uncommon in those days, a cheap, convenient and reliable means of supplying households with their weekly shop. As I remember there were two other boys much my age doing the same thing, including one whose task it was to deliver plants and flowers from a garden nursery. These included bouquets, bare root shrubs and even trees he managed to transport in the front basket, the trunks lying back and balanced over one shoulder as he cycled.
