The Exeter Ship Canal, five miles long, reaches the sea at Topsham, and was built in 1564-6 after the building of a bridge at Countess Wear stopped the use of the river for trade. The warehouse on the left is advertising Newfoundland fish, a trade which had started in 1563. Fishermen from all over Devon and Cornwall worked the cod stocks of the Grand Banks, and Topsham sent more ships across the Atlantic than any other port.
