Vacation With My Parents Family

A Memory of Exmouth.

Visited Exmouth with my parents brother & sister-in-law.  Remember the beautiful beach.  I was 10 years old at the time. I remember we stayed in a hotel not far from the beach, although I cannot remember the hotel name. We had a lovely week, the weather was beautiful  and we met some people on vacation from Europe.

We used to go as a family during the 1960's to Exmouth every year. We stayed in a Guest House run by a dear lady called Miss Carkett and her little Yorkshire terrier called 'Bobby' at number 5 Morton Road a turning opposite the sea-front .. My Dad was born in nearby Ottery St Mary and I can remember his two old Aunts had a beach hut quite near to the swimming pool in Exmouth and we all used to sit and have afternoon tea of scones, jam and clotted cream! .. The water in the swimming pool was sea water and was disgustingly salty! I remember meeting a young man in 1964 with the surname Rowsell whose family were closely connected somehow with the local lifeboat crew I believe. I remember watching the Tea Dances during the afternoons at The Pavilion and playing crazy golf quite close to some beautiful gardens .. My mind is full of so many wonderful memories of calomine lotion being dabbed on my sunburn, buckets and spades and kites that never flew on our happy carefree holidays in the sun!
