Old Road Failsworth Oldham

A Memory of Failsworth.

Hi I was brought up in a 2 up and down number 88 old road Failsworth I think I was about 3 when my parents bought that house I remember I went to nursery which was located on a side street near the Failsworth cenotaph this was 1958 by the way I do however remember starting at Mather street school frightened to death my the head mistress Mrs waits I think that was her name .she had the knack of terrifying you anyway I also remember the farm at the bottom end of Mather street. I also had a cousin who live on that street called Elaine burrows she left me by myself an emigrated to Australia I think I was 10yrs old at the time I don't remember any of the other kids names but my name Lynn Diane Thomas . My sure name is now Hayes I loved living in that little house I still go an see it although I live in Worsley my sister Janet still lives locally we often take a walk down memory lane.

I grew up in failsworth ....firs avenue...1956...the kids either side of us were Alan Dean & Howard spinks whose mum's ran the bethel cub pack..went to mather street school & failsworth secondary. My relatives lived on Dean...mather & dalton street....i used to play down the moggie & go to the broadway park. i also knew the pig farm where the scraps from our great school dinners went to be boiled up for swill. Went to the bethel sundayschool pantos & saturday kids matinee at the pop cinema at the pole. They built thousands of houses on bluebell wood in the early 60's which saddened me. loved playing down the airaid shelter on our drift & taking back bottles to get money for Broadway baths after which we bought stake muffins for ls as we were so hungry & had to walk there & back. Loved to go on 98 bus to Greenfield....escaping from the backyard to the countryside. Our pop man was deakins & it was either dandelion & burdock or sasperilla which came in brown & cream stone flagons for 1s 11d
Mum used to donkeystone the windowcills & doorsyeps every Friday with stones from the rag & bone man....i could write a book....think ive gone a long way towards it in this epistle😀
Wow, Lynn Diane Thomas, I remember you. I'm Leslie Peel and I lived at 31, Ash Street. We were in the same class at Mather Street. I think the Headmistress at the infants was Miss Satteswaite or something like that and the headmistress at the juniors was Mrs Waite. I was terrified of the pair of them. I remember one of our teachers was Mr Brown. I still live in Failsworth. I hope you see this x

Hi Lynn, I've not been on here much because I kept checking for months and gave up. I thought you may have stopped using this, so I tried searching on facebook for you, but couldn't find you on there either. Yes I lived with my Grandma on Ash Street and lots of children came here from school until their parents picked them up after work. I have been married for 47 years this year. We have a boy and girl and 5 grandchildren. We are still living in Failsworth, we never felt the need to move out really. It would be great to meet up and have a chat over a coffee and reminisce for a couple of hours. I am still listed in the phone book if you want to contact me, even though 99.9% of my calls are on mobile these days, we still kept the land line just in case. I just hope you check on here more frequently than you used to. I will definitely keep checking back. Les xx
