Fair Oak, The Square c.1965

More about this scene

The oak tree is regarded as the centre of the village. Formerly there was an annual fair supported by the landlord of the ancient Old George Inn (centre). The present tree was planted in 1843, an earlier one having rotted. It is said that parts of it were used to make a seat now in Winchester Cathedral, and also a remarkable, intricate sculpture of the tree and its surroundings which is a feature in the front room of Fair Oak Lodge, now used by the independent King's School.
