At this time there was not a lot for the children to do, other than paddle, dig trenches and make castles on the sandy beach. At Lytham there were swings, donkeys to ride, and Carlton's Pierrots amongst the sandhills. Stretches of beach like this one have in recent years been invaded by Spartina grass covering the once golden sand, but in 1913 the area of dunes was a magical playground for children.
