More about this scene
An inn has stood on this site for over 300 years, although the origins of its name are in dispute. The most plausible theory is that it was named after Richard Cromwell, son of Oliver, who bore this somewhat scathing nickname. Legend also has it that Dick Turpin once slept here, and as a result, lent his name to the inn.
