Local Hospital

A Memory of Featherstone.

I lived at Willow Lane in the mid fifties and I was in the local hospital there which I think was called Hayton Hospital(but not sure of the spelling or area) Can anyone remember this please or where I could maybe find a photograph. I remember there was a large house across the road from us with a long pathway. The children used to say it was the old witch house and would dare each other to get the furthest up the path to the house.

Hi could it have been Ackton hospital?
I think it probably was Ackton (sadly now houses) but it could have been Hightown near Castleford or Clayton in Wakefield. I think the house was the old Ackton Hall. It was a massive stone house that was mostly derelict apart from one section where the Priest family lived (Cynthia, Ricky, Ged, Annette, Bonita and possibly others). Not sure whether they should have been there or not... Ged (Gerald or Cheesey) was my mate / enemy. Think he might have died recently in Pontefract.
We played in the house from the 50s until at least 1966. It was like a small stately home surrounded by stone cottages and I think it had belonged to the owner of Featherstone Main pit which was also called Ackton Hall Colliery (maybe after the owners house). Older people called it Masham's pit, so maybe was owned by Lord and Lady Masham? Most pits were owned by Lord somebody or other, who built their massive houses and got their titles off the backs of poverty stricken worker's families.
