My Dad Was A Train Driver.

A Memory of Feltham.

I grew up and lived in Durham Road, Feltham. From 1952 to 1971.
Went to Cardinal Road infants school from 1957 - 1959. 1959 - 1963 Hanworth Road Junior School, 1963 -1967 Lafone Secondary School for Girls. Boundary Road, Hanworth.
My dad was a train driver and we used Feltham Train Station all the time. The entrance then was on the top of the bridge. My Church was St Catherine’s with the beautiful steeple. I was horrified to find out a couple of years ago that it is know longer a church has been turn into a block of flats.
I payed in the receation grounds with swings, witches hat roundabout, very tall metal slide, lots of other things including a very large wooden shelter. All of this was on a concrete base. Used to go and play there for years with my friends. Mums and dads didn’t take us we went on our own as we walked to school together. Went to work at Reddy Mechanical Handling, Feltham industrial estate. 1967. As an office junior. Got married in 1971 and moved away from Feltham. My mum and dad stayed there until 1987. I have such happy memories of growing up in Feltham.
The worst thing they ever did was pull down the town and build that concrete monstrosity.
Feltham Hotel was a very prestigious hotel, again I was so upset to see it had closed and was in an absolutely horrible state. So sad.
Sadly Feltham isn’t the pretty town that it used to. Such a shame.

Hi there, I wonder if I know you ? I lived in Sparrow Farm Drive, and used to walk to the same schools as you at the same time (era) I was born in 1951, so sad what they have done to Feltham, is the council office still by the pond, I remember walking there with mum to pay the rent. My name is Susan Crook, was Stone, and I now live in Lee on the Solent near Portsmouth. I would love to hear from you.
Hi, your name is familiar but can’t place you. I lived in Wigley Road, Hanworth. I also use to go to Council Offices to pay the rent. I don’t know if they are still there, I moved to Cornwall in 1969, go back occasionally to see family, one of my sisters now lives in Sunbury another in Kent and one down here in Cornwall. My name is Sue Mitchell, use to be Fisher. I knew a few people in Sparrow Farm, Steve Clack and Mick and Doreen Mitchell, no relation. I have so many memories of Feltham, Hanworth and around but like you get so upset at how run down it is now. I loved the old Woolworths, use to go in to get sweets to eat whilst waiting for 237 bus to go to grandparents in Sunbury., I was a paper girl for the paper shop by the railway station. I have 2 sons, retired 5 years ago from a Special School where I worked for 30 years. Cornwall is lovely but Middlesex is home, however I wouldn’t want to live there now. I could go on forever about the ‘old days’ but won’t! Nice to hear from you.
Sorry forgot I had already sent a comment, got so excited for a moment, you didn’t have miss bailey as a teacher in he junior school by any chance, and do you remember Terence Little - first boy to wear long trousers to school
I do remember Terry Little. We use to meet on the green in Wigley Road. He was a very tall boy I believe. The group included Geoff Bowers, Jonny Biggs, Keith Southgate, my sister Judy and her friend Kate. I also remember Linda Williams, Shirley Butterworth, Jill Newton, Coleen O’Connor, Lynn Rice, Carol Olive and Carol Vile. I remember Mrs Mason from Lafone, English teacher, very strict, Mrs Ash, music teacher and Miss Burton, PE. Mrs Pettit was h/t at Cardinal Rd, I think, Mr Troak, who threw a blackboard rubber at
me once! Freddie Foster who was a young, very popular boy who worked in fish & chip shop at Airman.
It is very strange as we as a family also used to catch the 237 to go to my grandparents that lived in Cecil Road, Ashford Common. Near Rowlands a very large shop. I do remember Miss Petit being the headmistress. Mr Taylor teacher at Hanworth Road Junior School. I was terrified of him as he would through a bunch of keys at us if we were talking.
My grandparents also lived Cecil Road Alford Common. We also used to catch the 237 to take us to Sunbury Cross then had to walk down to them. I was also a paper girl at the newsagents near Feltham Recreation Grounds where I used to go and play on the swings,Witches hat, very large swing that the lads used to stand at each end and try and get it to go right over and on 1 occasion they did. A very tall metal slide that used to get very hot on sunny days.
Sea saws. Large swing boat, wooden roundabout. A very large wooden shelter. I used to go there for years such fun especially during school summer
holidays. I also had a very good friend Paul Mason who used to live in Sparrow Farm. Does anyone remember Graham Shurb who used to be very naughty in glass. Naughty or not I really liked him. Jacky Sparks,
Jeanette McRayAdams, from Hanworth. Linda Miles, Rosemary Green who lived Boundary Road. Some of my class mates from Lafone. Does anyone remember Mrs Smyth our head mistress at who used to look like a bat in her black cape walking down the hall for morning assembly. So funny. I really enjoy talking to you all so nice that we all remember the same things.
