More about this scene
It was the coming of the railway that made Fleet a sought-after address, and it has remained a popular country town ever since. Considered to be Fleet's most famous landmark, the dome on the right is part of the old Oakleys department store. The store opened in 1885 and sold everything from groceries to bicycles, millinery and furniture. There was also an off-licence and funeral furnishing department. Oakleys closed in the late 1950s.
