Never A Lake

A Memory of Fleet.

I was sorry to see this photo of Fleet Pond labelled incorrectly as The Lake. Lakes are natural features, whereas ponds have normally been created by man. The two ponds which used to exist in Fleet (one was filled in with spoil when the motorway was built nearby) were created by monks as fish ponds for the Bishop of Winchester. The ponds were drained during World War 2 as they were in a direct line to the air base at Farnborough. As a child in the 1960s I used to go on school trips (from Eriva Dene School in Avondale Rd) to collect frogspawn and "tiddlers" from the Pond

I too went to Eriva Dene in the late 50's and early 60's. Remember very well going to learn to swim at the country club. We used to go blue as it was so cold
Great to hear from another Eriva Dene "old girl". My sister Jane and I went there together (the Tribble girls) and she now lives just around the corner from the old house - now smartened up and called The Old Schoolhouse! I remember the grey sandy playground and the stands of bamboo, and Mr Stevens, Mrs Searle, Mrs Smith and Miss Gerard. Also the game of throwing hats and caps over the wooden partition between the girls and boys cloakrooms!
