Frome, Market Place 1907

More about this scene
The town, built in oolitic limestone, is a most attractive one: its streets curve up and down hill picturesquely. Like Shepton Mallet and other southern cloth towns, it prospered until the woollen industry moved to Lancashire and Yorkshire's new mills after 1800 - thus in effect preserving the town for us architecturally through economic decay. Here, the Georgian character of the more formal Market Place is clear, descending to the bridge over the Frome.
