Nostalgic memories of Garelochhead's local history

Share your own memories of Garelochhead and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Does anybody remember Tam Ritchie and his band of merry men ? They were the council workers based at Dunivard Place always good for a laugh ! Tam lived in an old caravan which I think Marco Galli has rotting away in his yard at Glencairn Terrace .He drove the old steamroller when the were doing maintenance on the roads. If I remember when they disbanded the Garelochhead crew he moved to the wee road at the bottom of ...see more
Hi there- I am a researcher and my client is trying to piece together her late father's childhood. Born in 1925, John Askew was raised by his great grandmother, Agnes Askew (nee Grant). They lived in Glasgow but spent a lot of time at Garelochhead. There are vague memories of John helping out a man on the pier with ropes possibly, and helping out at the harbour....but only vague memories. I would be so interested if anyone knows anything! I know this is a long shot. Thank you!

I might be wrong with the year but, this is about the time the old primary school (Shore Road), moved into the new school at Bendarroch Park. My last class room at the old school was in the Gibson Hall (where from memory our gym classes were also held). I remember some names from those days: Janet and Sandra, the Macadam twins; Marion McCuish; Donald Smith; Alex Hamilton; Shiela Vanen; Fiona McNab; Angus ...see more
I remember Garelochhead well. I lived in the village. We made big swings with rope over the trees at the back of my house in Dunivard Place - I nearly killed myself on them lol. We played rounders and used to knock door and run - we always got told off but we still done it lol. I played jacks a lot with Nancy Bryce who lived next door. Who remembers jacks? We spent hours playing with them. We ...see more
I can always remember the long hot summer days swiming in the burn at the head of the loch with my twin brother Johnnie, Hugh Macintyre, David Clarke and others; we also used to go up the hill to the cairn. Our treat on a Saturday was to go to the Tower cinema in Helensburgh then on to the Kings Cafe for ice-cream and back on Foys bus. We also remember Annie Robertson and her sister, ...see more
I remember Joyce Malloch. I too lived in Queens Crescent - 2 doors down but was then known as Elaine Donaldson. Yes, and the teachers you remember were the Robertsons - I don't think many of us will forget them!! The Gibson Hall was another part of the school and Miss Glen used to teach in there. We had the freedom of playing in the woods and you could spend the whole day away from your home in complete safety. Freedom kids nowadays will just never know.
When I was about 10 / 11 years old our entire class, along with many other classes left Garelochhead Primary School, wound our way through Bendarroch Park, all crossed the road as uniformly as Mr Richmond (teacher) was able to manage; there was always a number of straggling wee boys, myself included. We strode past the Gibson Hall, past the houses on the shore, and onto the shore wall, and there it was. The biggest ...see more
I was born in Maitland Buildings in Helensburgh in 1950 moved to Shandon and then moved to Queens Crescent. I went  to primary school at Shore Road, I remember teachers were two sisters, I think they were called the Miss Robinsons. We used to go to mcylles burn to swim, we went to the dairy for milk and we used to play in the woods next to the coup. We got into trouble from our mothers. It was nice in the summers, ...see more
