Garforth School In Wartime
A Memory of Garforth.
I attended Garforth Primary 1940/41 until 1944 when I passed the Scholarship and the went to Tadcaster Grammar. There was an large Air Raid shelter in the playground with air raid practice every week. Also large School Gardens which we had to tend every week.Mothers collected sugar and made jam from the fruits in the school garden. The cinema had Saturday childrens programme for ONE old penny and after we would get one pennysworth of chips from the fish and chip shop nearby. We lived onWakefield Road but the house and its neighbours were demolished for roads some time ago.I cannot recall the Headmaster;s name but the Scholarship Teacher was a Mr Charleswoth who was not reluctant to use the cane[and on his son who was at the school]
Miss Braham was the other class teacher of mine and we always started the day reciting the 'times tables'Marbles and Whipping Tops in the playground were popular.Very fond memories indeed when children were children and seemed to not suffer from the traumas of modern day children.
