Nostalgic memories of Gislingham's local history

Share your own memories of Gislingham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I understand my Dad was born at Hospital Farm in 1901. The family then moved to Ivy Farm, Yaxley but I I'm not sure when? His older brothers Louis and Harry fought in the WW1 and sadly Harry was killed in 1918 and the family must have moved by then as there is a plaque to Harry in Yaxley church. I would be interested to know if Hospital farm house is still standing - perhaps the name has been changed? The family name is Farrow.
My mother is now 91 and attended Bacton school from 1927 to 1936. Her name was Marjorie Finbow and she remembers Walter Finbow, Frank Talbot, Mervyn Gull, Phyllis and Elsie Kilby, Kathy Reeve, Sylvia Blake. Does anyone know anything about people and if they are still around. She talks a lot about the past and would love to hear any news.
In 1950 my parents moved to Hospital Farm between Gislingam and Mellis. I lived there until 1959, my parents remained there until 1962. I went to the old village school from 1953, Mrs Chilvers was the Headmistress. I attended Sunday school at the chapel and can remember the anniversaries there. Then we had the Sunday school outings to the seaside. The village hall was built by people buying a brick ...see more
I also remember Southgates shop, I was born in Potash Cottage and my grandparents lived in Chapel Cottage until about 1959 when my grandmother died and my grandfather moved across the road to Peartree Cottage which was only a couple of doors up from Southgates shop and Mr Fisk. Mr Fisk used to take us to Finningham railway station in his car which presumably he operated as a taxi. My aunt and uncle ...see more
I remember Southgate's shop, although as a general store rather than as a greengrocer. My grandparents (and great-grandparents before them) lived next door (Fred and Carrie Bridges) in Mill Street, and we used to visit every school holiday from when I was about 5 years old. Harry was dead by then, but his widow (Ivy) and daughter (June) were still there. The village pump was just outside the gate, and ...see more
I was wondering if anybody can remember the greengrocers in gislingham by the name of Harry Southgate who was apparently a master grocer.
