Gorleston, The Harbour 1894

More about this scene
Seen here are some of over a thousand steam and sail drifters which operated out of Gorleston harbour during the herring season at the turn of the century. When this photograph was taken, considerable improvements were under way. Two lighthouses had been erected at the river mouth in 1887, and the fog bell, audible for 2 miles out to sea, was erected in 1895.
