Childhood 1980’s
A Memory of Gorton.
I was born and bred in Gorton we lived on Hemsworth Road facing the allotments around the corner from the old Loco as we called it and a hidden Gem called the horses field which was full of bluebell’s. We used to find old animal bones and climb trees and made a tree swing.
We loved exploring the loco - it was vast! But we had to be careful because it had piles of deep oil. We used to sit and watch Abbey Hey fc play for free from the old railway tracks.
I love that we could follow the path next to the loco all the way into Reddish park and then follow the old railway line in the opposite direction to Debdale park.
Debdale was a beautiful park I remember peacocks walking around and geese.
They had old toilets with caged small birds and other animals in the middle.
Golf course but we did just want to mess around in the sand. As a family we would go and have a picnic at the banking of the reservoir and go have a swim also trying to catch frogs and tadpoles in a little brook.
Sunny brow park was also beautiful back then being in a valley with beautiful trees flowers and feeding the ducks.
Going into the old cemetery next to very old cottages on far lane was like you had been transported back in time and feels like you’re in the countryside. I have very fond memories of growing up in Gorton in a different time.
