More about this scene
This delightful old stone pack-horse bridge has stood here since the 16th century. It is named after the Earls of Essex, who lived at Chartley Hall. Originally it linked Great Haywood to the old village of Shugborough; the village was later removed by the Ansons as it spoiled their view. The angular refuges allowed people to stand aside whilst pack-horses crossed.
