Memories Of The Six Bells

A Memory of Great Waltham.

In 1967 I was sent up to the Ford Competitions Department as Resident Engineer at the age of 20. I stayed for almost a whole year in the Six Bells. The Landlord was Jack Scrase, I can't remember his wife's name. There was a son who visited sometimes and he was a lawyer, I remember he was in a TV advert for Polo mints. There was a dog, a golden retriever, that I used to take for walks, well actually he took me for walks because he knew the way he wanted to go. I stayed there on a "bed and breakfast" basis but often I was invited to eat dinner with the family, particularly when the local shoot presented the pub with a brace of pheasants. Sometimes at weekends I was left in charge of the "Cortina bar" hoping that not too many people would come in! Quite a few visitors for Ford stayed at the Six Bells, I remember Roger Clark the rally driver and Graham Hill the Grand Prix driver staying there. Good times.... David.
