More about this scene
The old gentlemen on the right is a typical resident of the hospital, more so than the smart gentleman on the left, strolling with a lady who is keeping up with the latest fashion of a bustled skirt. The hospital was founded in 1702; it could accommodate up to twenty fishermen, who were either disabled or over 60 years old. In the background is the spire of St Nicholas's church.
