More about this scene
The man with the dog is carrying a scythe. Beyond him, the sign jutting into the road is for Taylor Inman, plumber and painter. The road through Greenodd is part of the 1820 turnpike route from Lancaster to Kirkby Ireleth, so in the coaching era Greenodd was a very busy place. Until the mid 1800s it was also a port under the control of Lancaster, exporting gunpowder, copper ore, limestone burnt in local kilns, and other goods. Small ships were also built here.
