More about this scene

In 1875, Mr Tuke's windmill caught fire. Isaac Chalkley, Superintendent of the Hitchin Fire Brigade, brought the new horse-drawn Shand-Mason pump to the site, and the fire appeared to be under control. Suddenly it flared up again, and despite the efforts of the brigade, all was in vain and the mill was destroyed. From this favourite picnic spot, we can see the parish church standing proudly in the centre of the picture with the trees to its right covering the new market and car parks.
