Immediately north of the Town Hall there used to be a small park or square. This disappeared when the Town Hall extension was built in 1971-75, its seven storeys uncompromisingly at odds with the old town hall building: architectural bad manners or boldly innovative, depending on your point of view. Beyond is King Street, where the single-storey gabled building went in the 1990s for a four-storey neo-Georgian building.

I Lived In King St In The 1950s
I lived in King St in the 1950s on the right as you go down the road almost opposite the classic cinema which closed in 1959. Dimes place above a shop is where my mother and I lived.

Kings St
My 3rd great grandparents, Edward and Esther Deed (nee Perry), lived in Kings St, Hammersmith prior to emigrating to Australia in 1838. They had 9 children when they left Hammersmith to board the ship 'Canton' in London in April 1838. They were married at All Saints Church, Fullham on 24 Apr 1821.

A Family Wedding At St Peter's Church Hammersmith
A few hundred yards west of Furnivall Gardens is St Peter's Church - the oldest and grandest church in Hammersmith. This is where my great-grandparents married on 27th September 1873: William Henry Howard and Jane Esther (or Hester) Goodwill.

Another Howard Family Living In Hammersmith
My mother, Phyllis Howard Penn, was born in Kensington and had a brother Jack, his wife Ethel, their son, John Desmond Howard, his wife, Eileen and their son, John, who lived on Claybrook Road. I met them all for the first time in 1958. I was again in Hammersmith in 2001, while on a tour of the British Isles, but there are no members of this Howard family left there.

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
