Harold Hill And Brookside School Until 1963
A Memory of Harold Hill.
I was born in Oldchurch Hospital, Romford and lived in Dorking Road until about 1963. I used to walk to Brookside school, as we did in those days, but it wasn't far. I remember a flood when the local river (stream?) overflowed and Dorking Road where we lived was flooded but the water stopped just below our step, but the school was flooded and I remember seeing a "high tide" mark up the walls in the classrooms. I also remember the smog on Autumn 1962 and you really couldn't see more than a few yards.
We used to go to the funfair when it visited Central Park, and myself and friends from school would wander far and wide.
My Dad used to take me and my brother along to Gidea Park station, or at least a railway bridge, where we saw the last steam trains puff past. Nice memories.
