Nostalgic memories of Harpurhey's local history

Share your own memories of Harpurhey and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Hi does anyone remember Brian Wall. His mum was lilian. He was mainly brought up with his grandmother. He married Elsie Robinson who lived on Albert Street I think.
I am looking for any information about my grandparents. I recently found out that my Mum, Patricia was adopted by my grandad, and there is no father's name on her birth certificate, only my nana's, Sarah Gorman (Sally). Sally lived at 1 Westmoreland Street, Harpurhey and she gave birth to my mum at 21 Collyhurst Buildings on 4th Nov 1946. I am not sure why she was born there and who lived there. ...see more

I moved to no 52 School Street around 1964 or 65. My parents were John & Vera - they were Irish. We lived next to Edna Brown who had Stephen, David and Lorraine. There were other people on the street - the Entwistle family, George Wren, Anne Jameson the hairdresser at the end of the street, there was Roy and Merl who played music so loud on her stereo - all the 1960s classics. At the top ...see more
I lived in Sunderland St just off Monsell Lane. Went to Harpurhey High, remember Queens Park, the market and being woken up every morning by the Dog's Home just down the street. Happy childhood growing up in Harpurhay.
We lived on Park View facing the library and Queens Park which had its own museum and everything a victorian park could offer two young brothers yearning for adventures. We would ride our guiders all over that park, and enjoy the corporation pop fountain near the front gate on Queens Road. We would lark about in the abandoned Sydney Smith's gramophone shop near to the hippodrome, we would pelt over to ...see more
I remember dressing up in my cow-girl outfit, Saturday matinee on Factory Lane at the pictures, the manager worked so hard to organise everything. I have a photo showing us all, happy memories. My mother used to to go the public laundry and I used to have a bath once a week at the public baths. We used to play on the "croft" and spend the day in Boggart hole Clough with a bottle of water and a jam butty, quite safe then. Patricia Gallagher
