More about this scene
The discovery of spa water in 1571 led to a remarkable period in the town's history. Here in Low Harrogate hotels and stylish crescents were built, attracting a very high-class visitor. The Pump Room here was constructed in 1842 over the sulphur wells. Now it is a fascinating museum, where visitors are encouraged to sample the health-giving water. To the left is Hales Bar, a coaching inn from 1849, and behind the Pump Room is the Crown Hotel, rebuilt in 1847.
