Southlands School, Harrow On The Hill

A Memory of Harrow on the Hill.

I attended this school as a weekly border in about 1960-61. At the time Helen Shapiro's first record was number one in the hit parade and Lilian Bailey was out head girl. The school was in a rambling old house and in the evening we spent a lot of time on the common room floor playing 'jacks' on the shiny Lino, an ideal surface for scooping up the little jacks before catching the small rubber ball.

I was in one of the younger classes and we slept in a dormitory and told each other ghost stories when the lights were out. We have a prefect in charge and she had her own room at the end of the dormitory. Our prefect had black hair and glasses but I cannot remember her name.
One of my classmates was an American girl and her parents were chiropractors.

We all use to have a tea of jam sandwiches and sometimes apples. I remember a nice Nigerian student who had the most lovel gold earrings like small bunches of grapes, and we used to eat our apples dipped in salt.

The school grounds were lovely, dominated by a huge weeping willow with branches down to the ground and a magnificent Cedar of Lebanon.

Miss Panter was the headmistress, and we had a petite young Welsh maths teacher.

My name then was Wendy Langley.
