Southlands School,South Hill Ave, Harrow On The Hill.

A Memory of Harrow on the Hill.

I went to Southlands school harrow on the hill from 1958-1968 when it closed down. It was a victorian building and catered for day girls and borders. Many of the borders had parents living and working abroad. It was a close knit community of up to 150 girls, of every race, creed, and religion
I was a border there from 1959, under the head a Miss E M Panter, assisted by the teachers and Matron.Who were strict but fair, in all their dealings with us.
I remember cold frosty mornings, where your breath hung in the air.In winter it was really cold and we would get chilblains .We had breakfast then assembly, where there would be a roll call of the entire school. Mid morning we would be offered camp coffee made with hot milk, or cold milk for the juniors. Lunch consisted of typical boarding school fare. With puddings such as thames mud, chocolate sponge with chocolate sauce. In the afternoon after lessons we had tea.Evenings would be spent doing homework in the common room or class room if you misbehaved. At the end of term all sorts of weird and wonderful food was smuggled in for midnight feasts, which we had in the dorms.
On Sunday we would walk to either Roxeth church or St Marys on Harrow on the hill, for a church service. It was quite a sporty school, we did gymnastics, tennis, swimming, netball, and the four school houses St Andrew, St David, St George, and St Patrick competed against each other.
I have plenty of pictures of the back but none of the front.of the school. If anyone knows where I can get a photo of the front please let me know. A group of us recently met up for a reunion in London after 5 decades, it was a blast!

Would love to share some photos of the building, but cannot see a way of doing it.

I was around 14 when I went there and diid my O levels and then had to go to the Grammar School to A levels - Harrow County Girls

Not a good experience

Having had a few years of a great eccentric creative and extradinory school in Southlands - with great strong women running it.
