Clipped Hedge Turkey Farm By Robert Johnstone Ayliffe Was (Bob Stone)

A Memory of Hatfield Heath.

I left school in 1962 and joined Clipped Hedge Turkey Farm on the Heath. I had already been working on the farm before leaving school. John Goddard was the owner and had another farm in Bishops Stortford for breeding purposes. I lived in Bishops Stortford and shared my time between the two farms. I knew many people on the Heath who worked on the farm in those days. Gilbert Hutchin who lived in Elm Cottage on the Heath. Others were: Malcom Jackson, Charlie Bird, Jeff Smith, Carmen (ex pow), Jack Gunn, Lou Armatage and many more. Jack and Lou would tell stories of their experiences during WW1. I left the farm in 1967 and went into banking where I have been for the last forty years or so - quite a contrast as on a farm you had to be a carpenter, plumber, AI, and killing specialist all rolled into one, The farm closed and I lost contact with most of the staff and the owner John Goddard. Life on the farm certainly taught me a thing or two.
