The modern segment of Hawkhurst, known as Highgate, grew up along a section of the A268 during the 18th and 19th centuries. This fairly graceful early 19th-century shopping arcade, with its weatherboarded houses with large shop windows under a colonnade of thin cast iron columns, included a general hardware and implement store, whose proprietor has clearly taken advantage of its protective covering to display an assortment of his wares on the pavement below.
