More about this scene
These cottages are typical of this lovely Lakeland village, which clusters around its 16th-century church. The poet William Wordsworth and his brother Richard attended the grammar school here, and Beatrix Potter married the local solicitor, William Heelis. His former office, now in the care of the National Trust, is opened as a gallery, displaying illustrations from her children's books.
