Park Hall

A Memory of Hayfield.

I was born in Hayfield in 1933 and lived there until 1947 when we moved to Hadfield. My parents were friends of the people who owned and built Park Hall swimming pool and we 4 children all learned to swim there in the icy water. It was always a private pool but became open to members who paid a fee to join.I remember it so well - we used to go there direct from school all summer and in the holidays and it is one of my many happy and abiding memories of Hayfield.
The pool had statues surrounding it and terraced stone seating. There were two pools, one below the other and they were fed by the streams from Kinder. I remember particularly the restaurant . . with its glass surround and cream coloured "leather" seating. It always seemed to smell of vanilla icecream. Sadly the storms of 1947(?) did an enormous amount of damage to the pool and it was never the same again.
