Scracebridge School
A Memory of Haywards Heath.
I went to Scracebridge in 1957 as part of the "Grammar Stream" waiting for Haywards Heath Grammar School to be completed. The"Grammar Grubs", as were were affectionately known, received a pretty hostile reception, and we were instantly recognizable by our brand new school uniforms, and we were only pupils in the school required to wear it. I remember it as being 2 years of sustained bullying by the locals, but in hindsight maybe no worse than any other high school year ones and twos. However we were pretty happy to head off to our brand new school in 1959!
We did take some staff from Scracebridge with us including Mr Jarvis as headmaster. I particularly remember Mr Treble, the music teacher as his name seemed so appropriate!

My name is John Cobby. I assume that your name is Adrian Mounsden. If so, we were fellow students in the same class at Scracebridge School from 1956-1958. It would be great to hear from you. John
Sorry...your guessed the wrong Adrian. I think that we must have been in different classes during that time. Some of my fellow classmates were Robin Wallis, Bill Swallow Dave Turton and Rod French. I do remember Adrian Mounsden who possibly was a friend of Simon Turner both of which are probably sitting in the House of Lords these days!
When I saw your name, an image of a studious young lad wearing what we used to call National Health glasses getting on the train at Burgess Hill....was that you?
The Scrase Bridge years I remember as being fairly traumatic with constant bullying from the unblazored brigade, running the gauntlet of the access road to the school, retrieving caps from the stinging nettles! But I guess it was all character building stuff and the memories have faded now, maybe helped by our age....
So it’s Adrian Eastwell here, John.
My grandfather was Edwin Street and we lived next to his butchers shop at the corner of London and Church Rd. We have spent the last 45 years in Australia , but not transported as some of my teachers may have suggested would be my fate!
In recent years I have made contact with some of our old school acquaintances to share those old memories. It would be good to hear from you. Cheers Adrian
One year during the service, a group of senior boys decided to recreate a snowstorm during the carol service. They stood in an elevated position at the back of the church and sprinked their shredded song sheets onto the pupils below. As you can imagine it was not well recieved by the teachers but caused great amusement amoung the pupils.
Anyone else remember this?
