More about this scene

When the Cardigan estate at Kirkstall and Headingley was sold at auction in 1889, a group of businessmen with an enthusiasm for sports purchased Lot 17A. This was to become the home of the Leeds Cricket, Football and Athletic Company. The very first cricket match played here in 1890 was between Leeds and Scarborough. Also, in the same year a North of England XI entertained the Australian team. In the first Yorkshire cricket game in June 1891 the home team lost to Derbyshire by 45 runs. Test cricket came in 1899, and rugby was first played here in 1895 by Leeds FC, one of the twenty original clubs that formed the Rugby League.
