Helsby Hill totally dominates all views of the village that sits below. Once the site of an ancient Iron Age hill-fort, stone from here was quarried in the 19th century and used for the building of the docks at Liverpool. Some was also used whtn the cathedral at Chester was repaired. Today the escarpment is protected by the National Trust.
