Fishing On The River At Hemingford Grey

A Memory of Hemingford Grey.

I recall spending a few days holiday each year in the 1960's with my father Ronald Lane and his friend from Vauxhall Motors called Archie Harrup.
Archie used to rent out a houseboat every year from the boatyard and had it moored up in the meadow at Hemingford Grey during this time. I looked upon Archie as being a Jack Hargreaves type of guy at the time.
We went fishing with Archie on numerous occasions and as a young boy aged 10-12 I used to love staying on the houseboat and listening to his stories while catching a net full of roach and bream.
Archie from Dunstable would always spend part of his 2 week holiday oil painting from the bank and I still possess 2 of his paintings of the boathouse and the church at Hemingford.
Strange how things stay in your memory but I also remember being bitten by a corgi dog near the boat house on one occasion.
Happy memories.

Steve Lane.

Had a wonderful childhood in Hemingford Grey. We had over 20 apple trees surrounding the old house (now sadly gone) and a long drive flanked by 2 disused tennis courts we valiantly tried to reclaim. Huge Copper Beech absolutely blazed in fall and we heated the house with 2 tonnes of coal in the winter-guess who got to carry that!
Fond times with George Honey (RAF), his wife and two children (Lorna and Colin). Babysat by Tina Giddens and tea at the Boathouse was a real treat. Bought many Matchbox cars and Airfix models from the smoke shop and pounds of licorice comfits from the General Store and my first Wellingtons.
