The Cedars Childrens Home, Barnsley Road, Hemsworth

A Memory of Hemsworth.

I would like to contact anyone that resided as a child at the above (The Cedars) between the years 1954 to 1965. I have been told the building was demolished some years ago and any photos would be gratefully received. Does the Hemsworth & Sth Elmsal Express have any archive footage? Or the local local institution, local council (known then as the "West Riding County Council". Is there anyone familiar with the following names; Fishwick, Leek, Schofield, Carter, Dean, Butterworth, Unwin, Forster. Does the "West End School" still exist? Harold Brown was my best friend there. Keep your eyes on this web page as I will be writing an extensive story re the Cedars circa 1954 to 1965 about events that actually took place, it will make very interesting reading indeed. So if there is anyone out there that was residing there during that period please reply. I now live in Kent. Thank you for your time.

hi i was wondering if you could give me some more info on harold brown as he maybe my great uncle.
Hi Robert,
I'm intouch with Howard Forester through Hemsworth Bygone Days... I've sent him all the info and photographs that I've got from the time he was there..... Recently I've just done a site on Facebook it's called Hemsworth Westend and other schools in the Hemsworth area... If you went to the Hemsworth County Primary School ( Brewins) you might be on them...Gill.
I do know of the Brown family of Hemsworth if you are still interested.
Was doing a bit of searching for Hemsworth Childrens home and found this post. I was there along with several of my sisters around 1961. I remember Howard Foster - he had a brother called Robert who was a bit of a bugger if my memory serves. Now well into my 60s but still remember quite a few names - unfortunately none of the ones listed

H i I travel through Hemsworth weekly and I also remember the childrens home [ which has gone now thankfully] I remember a Barry Fishwick and his bright red hair and someone called Unwin . What still in memory is that all the children seemed to all dress the same in their regulation blue macks and black shoes. The west end school I went to is now a primary school and all the older children now go to the academy [ex grammer school] I also attended the new school [Brewins] until 1959, lots of memories of Hemsworth and area and mis spent youth

Hi I married one of the 3 Darbyshire sisters, they are Carol, Denise [who is my wife for 53 years now] and Lynn. My wife went to West End school and one of her friends was a girl called Dawn Brown who we have been told still lives in Hemsworth, she will be in her early 70s now as we are. My wife often talks about her and would love to get in touch.
