Lodge Rd

A Memory of Hendon.

I lived at 11 Lodge rd 1950/1960 the photo brings back so many memories as my dad was projectionist at the ABC Golders Green but only ever remember the cinema on corner referred to, as the Odeon, there was also the Classic (now shops) & the Gaumont (now a gym). Lodge Rd, as I remember, had an express dairy & stables at the bottom next to a flour store that served the lovely bakery on the corner, the electric co was at the top. I used to go to school at Bell Lane (Dennis Compton's old school) friends from that era included David & Michael Tappin, Colin Rich, Barry Measure, Marianne Fisher, in those days there were plenty of old derelict housing off Brent St were we would have good fun, Sunny Hill/ Queens Park & the grove were also good playgrounds sometimes we'd venture down to the river Brent. I lived in Bell lane, my dad was one of the Greek barber at the top of Bell Lane.
I went to Bell Lane school, had a bad start there with mrs Austin and Mrs Suffling. Who seemed to hate children.

I was at Bell lane school in 1955/60 the teachers I remember were Mr Kew & Humphries, I did get my haircut at the barbershop that your dad worked in a few times as a kid, in fact I have been running my own barbershop in Cambridge where I live since 72, relations of my used to run a cafe on the other side of Bell lane just down from the Bell pub, mum used to often take me for lunch at another little cafe on Brent street just up from Riches the green grocers whose son Colin I was at school with.

I was at Bell Lane School until 1957.Mr Humphries was my teacher in 3a.
I lived in Hillview Gardens.Michael and David Tapping lived in the flat below me.
I worked at the Hendon and Finchley Times in Church Road from 1961 - 1964.
Walklin was the Bakery on the corner of Lodge Road.

Well what a coincidence, they used to live in Victoria rd when I was in lodge rd, I last met David in the Chequers ( now closed ) in 68 he did say they'd moved but I could not remember where, my grandfather also used to work at the Hendon times but that would have been in the 30's or 40's I think he was a print setter. When this covid thing is over if ever, I must get back down there to see what's left of the places I remember it looks like all the pubs have gone apart from the Greyhound and the White Swan Golders Green which my great uncle Bunny used to run has been built on and the Lido cinema where dad used to work has also gone but that's progress I suppose.

I'm trying to do a bit of research on my late father Stan Day who was born in 1928. He was a bit of a face around Hendon and known locally. We lived in Hendon til the mid 80's. If anyone knows anything about him I would really appreciate it

I recall a 'Jumbo' Day, who was one of a group of adults who organised games for kids and teenagers in Sunny Hill Park on summer Friday evenings in the early 1960s. No idea what his formal first name was, however.

Mr Glinos was next to Rich's Greengrocers and then the Sweet Shop. I lived opposite those shops. I went to Bell Lane School and had all those teachers mentioned. Belle Vue Terrace was mostly a bomb site and all of us post war children played on it. There were so many children then. There was a Laundry there that my mother in law worked st for years. I knew so many people, it was a great time and I miss it.

Stan and Jack Day were childhood friends of my brother George and myself. George was the father of the Colin Rich mentioned by Alan Davis in an earlier post. My name is also Colin and, like Stan, l was born in 1928. George and I lived above our shop, Rich’s Greengrocers in Brent Street (at that time we had two shops, one in Bell Lane and one in Brent Street). Stan and Jack lived close by in Crowley Place, behind Sainsbury’s. We all went to Bell Lane School and Stan and I were in the School football team together. I recall that Stan was a good footballer and was very popular. I was with Stan and Jack on the sad day that their younger brother Harold died. I have many more memories of those times.
