In 1935, following their success in an architectural competition, James & Bywater, with Rowland Pierce, oversaw the building of the new County Hall in Peggs Lane. Miskin & Sons were the main contractors, and Bysouth Ltd carried out much of the stonework. The building was completed in 1939.
