More about this scene
The Lancaster Canal follows a sinuous course between Tewitfield locks and a splendid aqueduct carrying it across the River Lune, just outside Lancaster. Eventually completed around 1819, it ran for 75 miles between Kendal and Preston. As well as carrying freight, there was a passenger service that completed the journey in less than 14 hours, with refreshments served on board.
