More about this scene

The Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital, Heswall was opened in 1911 on a 9-acre site bordering Telegraph Road. The hospital originally had a series of open air wards (not visible here) to the rear of the building, with one side of each ward being totally open to the elements. The philosophy at the time was that fresh air would help clear congested lungs, particularly with diseases such as TB. The wards were later enclosed when opinions about the nation's health changed. The hospital closed in 1985 and was demolished in 1989; a Tesco supermarket now occupies the site.
