Heswall, Telegraph Road c.1960

More about this scene
The centre of Heswall was originally much closer to the shoreline, probably in the area around Village Road and St Peter's Church, but the advent of Telegraph Road - the A540 - has moved the commercial emphasis further westward. These images highlight the differences that can occur in a decade. Possibly the most obvious are the loss of the cinema on the opposite side of the road from Lloyd's Bank (H276053, in the mid distance, right) and the rebuilding of the church (H276132, right). Traffic controls are creeping in and in today's Heswall the junction is controlled by traffic lights and several miles of yellow lines. Many of the retailers in our photographs have disappeared to be replaced by fast food outlets, video rental stores and national chains. In fact, the town is one of the few in West Wirral where national brand names have made significant inroads.
