The Furniture Making Town By Ann Martyr

A Memory of High Wycombe.

When I was at the High School my form was taken out to the beech woods to see Bodgers at work. I think that this was organised by the History Mistress. Miss Owen.
They lived in a camp and hand made chair legs for thr Furniture makers in Town. I remember that we were shown how a Pole Lathe was used. I still have rolling pin made by one of the men, and sold to me. It would have cost me very little : pocket money being about half a crown a week then.
For those who did not use pre-decimalised currency, half a crown was 2 shillings and sixpence. There were 8 halfcrowns to the pound.
I am remembering the mid 1940s.

Comments & Feedback

Hi Ann, that was an interesting comment. I was born in High Wycombe in the 1940s, and lived there until I went to Uni. I remember the bodgers huts in the woods in the late 40s or early 50s. I had relatives in the furniture industry.

I was always interested in pole lathes after seeing them demonstrated at Wycombe shows. I never built one, but I now have a modern electrically powered wood lathe that I use for hobby projects.
