This view and 61432 on page 36 presage the changes to come in the 20th century. By 1924 the motor car has made its appearance, along with a parade of new shops on the left-hand side, and an AA patrolman is already on hand to assist traffic. By the end of the century, this crossroads had become a bottleneck, with traffic lights and filter systems installed to cope with the constant stream of cars and juggernaut lorries passing through Hindhead.
