Nostalgic memories of Hindhead's local history

Share your own memories of Hindhead and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I’m Edward Jones served in Connaught catering corp in the kitchen from 58-60. Staff Hurley was in charge of the kitchen at this time, he was a very good man. We all used to go to the seven thorns pub. Would like to know if anyone remembers me that was serving at the same time. Would love to catch up.
My father (a now retired Baptist Minister) left his church in Godalming in 1970 and we moved to Hindhead for a couple of years. We lived in a flat in Honeyhanger, formerly a hotel but by then a large house conveted to flats. It was then still owned by Mrs Mary Aubrey-Moore (whose Baprist minister husband had died by then) and we got the flat as they were friends of my father. It was a lovely place to live, with a ...see more
I was posted to Hindhead as a young policeman in January,1961 and stayed until January 1970. We used to make a conference point at the telephone box opposite the corner shop where Sergeant France could meet or contact us. Mr and Mrs Pullen used to run the corner shop. Opposite was the Bank then Mr and Mrs Dollery's greengrocers then the chemist, and then Anselmi's cafe. Further up the hill on the same side was ...see more
I joined the Queen Alexandra Nursing Corps in 1958 and came down from Scotland to QA depot at Hindhead. After training at the Dental College, Aldershot was posted to the Dental Centre, Connaught Hospital. My name was then Smith. Met my husband Barney Barnard there, he was doing his National Service in the medics, although most of his time was on switchboard. We were married from the camp on the 21st March 1959. I ...see more
I was evacuated in 1940 and in 1944 and billeted to Admiral and Lady Freemantle's house named Goldcrest on the A287. Does anyone know the year when the present Goldcrest (an old people's home) was built? Is it the same house that I stayed in during WW2? William Heath
I lived in Beacon Hill Road at the Police House in the 1950s and played cricket for Hindhead C.C when I was about 14, such great days. I was also reserve organist at Beacon Hill Congregational Church where Miss Katherine Osborne normally was. She was my music teacher and a lady I held in the highest respect.
My family lived in a house that I thought was in the devils punchbowl in Hindhead. We lived there late 60's early 70's. I could be mistaken as I was only 7 years old. I believe it was called Hill Lodge. It was off a main road and I remember a large garden before it became nature. My parents then moved to Germany and I attended The Grove school in Hindhead. If anybody knows where Hill Lodge ...see more
I served in the RAMC and spent 1958 and 1959 at Connaught Hospital. I worked as a clerk in the hospital office. I held the rank of corporal. I rememberr Phil Reid and saw his contribution to this page. I agree there were some very happy memories of the place.
The building I remember, was an 'H' with a left and right small corridor on both floors, joining the H. Looking back across a lovely rose garden, each leg of the H a semi circular lead light front.
