More about this scene
The internal combustion engine reigns supreme. Viewed from the opposite angle, the Market Place has been transformed into a modern car park. The tower and spire of St Mary's Church rises above the rich assortment of architectural styles, which range from the 15th to the 20th centuries, with several of the buildings having recently been given a facelift. Among them are the drapery firm George Spurr, on the extreme right, and the rental shop of Bold & Burrows Ltd. The ornately timbered upper storey of the adjoining shop, formerly Maison Gerard, now has a modern frontage bearing the name Sarah Lewis. Already, several of the rooftops boast television aerials.
