More about this scene

The Chequers Hotel (left) is still in business, but the Freeman, Hardy & Willis shoe shop next door has gone - the building is now used by Eastern Delight. Hanson's Bakery is beyond in the shop that was Bayston's, who were farmers, purveyors of meat, bakers and confectioners. The Bell Hotel next door is also still there, but the building beyond has gone, being replaced by Lloyds Bank. The entrance canopy of the Chequers Hotel has been removed. Canopies like this get knocked off by lorries, as has been the case at Grantham and Navenby.

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. These memories are of Holbeach, High Street c.1955

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

My mam and dad, Linda and Harry Leggett ran the general store and cafe next to the bus stop for a few years from 1960. I had the music shop in Chapel Street, Holbeach Music Supplies from 1959 until 1967ish. Loved it. If there was a magic wand I would turn the clock back. I live in Cornwall now but I come back to visit regularly. Jan
